The Polytechnic was shut down indefinitely by the School authorities on October 2, 2014 following a violent protest by some students of the institution.

The new chairman of the Governing Council of RIVPOLY, independence Enyinda stated this shortly after the new RIVPOLY Governing council was sworn-in by Governor Chibuike Amaechi at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Monday.

Enyinda said the school needs to be reopened for academic activities to resume so as to cover lost grounds due to the last nation-wide strike by polytechnic lecturers.
He said it was regrettable that a minor incident could be allowed to escalate, leading to damage of schools properties and closure of the institution.
